Approach

Scenarios developed in the Long View Lab are narratives that describe alternative paths for the future. They represent possible futures, revealing a broad band of possible results based on plausible hypothesis, and this way, allowing us to imagine what can happen. They are not predictions of what will happen, but help us understand what might happen starting today, reducing uncertainty and creating foundations for action strategies that are more robust.

Innovation

How broad is your vision to formulate strategy? How does one plan for the future if it is complex and uncertain? What is the future of the environment or market where we will operate in the next years? The development of scenarios leads us to better appraisal of which are the possible paths to follow in the future.

Good scenarios are plausible, surprising and have the power to dissolve old paradigms. They permit the avoidance of situations where events may surprise us. They question conventional visions about the future, aid in perceiving signs of change, and establishing follow-up parameters for strategies in different circumstances.

The scenarios usually provide a common vocabulary and communication base of conditions and action options for the future, among the participants of the process. This creates internal capacity to better make decisions considering the external environment, and the continual refinement of the vision of the future.

The use of scenarios is like rehearsing for the future before it actually arrives. In recognizing indicators as warning signals of a story that is emerging, one can avoid surprises, adapt and act instead of reacting. Decisions that are previously tested against a myriad of possible futures have a better chance of surviving the test of time, producing more robust implementation strategies.

Essentially, scenarios are an excellent activity so that a diverse group gets a systemic understanding of the future. Strategy and vision, without systemic understanding end up creating likeable images of the future, but totally unprovided of a profound understanding of the factors that actually formulate the future, allowing us to leave today behind and move onto tomorrow.
