Approach

“The only source of sustainable competitive advantage is the capacity of the institution to learn more and faster than it’s competitors” – Arie de Geus, author of “The Living Company” and former Vice President of Group Planning at Royal Dutch/Shell.

In a time of increasingly accelerated change and growing interdependence of institutions, great adaptation power and pro-activity is demanded to face new realities. Institutions need to develop their own capacity to promote and manage their changes.

In other words, it is not exclusively an HR department’s challenge. Institutions as a whole can take over the process of change as they “learn to learn”, as they explore and question restrictions that keep the institution at present performance levels, and in this way “reinvent” themselves to reach the future that they really wish for.

Training and Capacity Building with Learning from Practice

How many times have we participated in Capacity Building activities that focus on “how to do it right”, or demonstrate the reasoning behind a solution without counting on our participation?

Learning through Practice takes into consideration that we learn better by interacting, through active participation in the learning process. This is so, because according to modern learning techniques, a new concept is acquired only if it makes sense to the pupil. And for it to make sense, it has to be in context with the reality of that pupil.

Practical activities place us as participants in a metaphor, an analogy to reality. In this sense, it is rich so that each participant reads the same message in many different ways, that is, in their each individual way. Interacting with other participants and with the “rules” of the metaphor, the participant may, on his own, add a new interpretation or component to the understanding . At the end, “I learned because I did it and realized that this was more adequate or better”, instead of “I was told this way works better”, and there is a huge difference between the two results.

This difference may be the issue that is affecting your organization’s effectiveness in the training and capacity building activities. Could your institution’s activities be better evaluated, or deliver better and more concrete results?

Consentes offers learning through practice activities, reformulating existing institution activities, or adding some from our repertoire, appropriately adapted to the reality of your institution. Contact us and get to know about the learning activities that have already been used by several of our clients. These are a few:

  • Beer Game: learning the relation between the different participants of a chain of value;
  • Flight Simulator: taking control of companies to understand their business management;
  • Venture Out!: a learning environment for internal and external entrepreneurs.
